The naive war
– art.trauma.propaganda
23.08.19–05.01.20

Dialogic Tour

The exhibition is dedicated to the creative processing of war experiences in folk and lay art. The Georg Barber / ATAK collection documents a very special genre of memory culture: personal works by people in wartime who artistically thematised their experiences as soldiers or prisoners in various forms of expression. The drawings, paintings and model buildings on display create an intense proximity to the experiences of those affected. Their timeframe extends from the two world wars to the present day. In a dialogical tour, historical testimonies of the exhibition are discussed together with works by contemporary artists such as Moritz Götze, Helge Reumann, Clemens von Wedemeyer, Thorsten Brinkmann and many others.

Exhibit war, live democracy!
Workshop for school gropus

The historical museums on the Citadel give the inital point for this workshop. Using the weapons collection on display, pupils will learn about the history of the military town Spandau and the role of the local arms industry in the First and Second World War. Exciting sources from the museum archive will help within this process. The two-hour workshop is intended to encourage pupils to connect historical and current topics. Questions about the conflict of the global arms trade, democracy in general, economic systems and life in a globalized world are unavoidable (for this educational program). In result-oriented workshop stations, the participants work in groups on an intervention in the exhibitions, questioning existing texts and providing them with up-to-date information.

Unveiled. Berlin and its Monuments.

Guided tour

Monuments fulfill various functions, representing power, identification, memory and remembrance. They are erected and then they disappear again. In “Unveiled. Berlin and its monuments”, around 100 original monuments and interactive media tell us of the city’s history: The rise and fall of political systems and their often difficult heritage in a public space. Among the most important exhibits are the statues from the historical Siegesallee, built between 1898 and 1901, and the head of the Friedrichshain Lenin monument, unveiled in 1970. Touching is permitted with some exceptions!
