Every two years, the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art brings together international artists, theoreticians, and practitioners in exhibitions and accompanying programs. With its political profile, it stands for committed art that addresses the urgent questions of the present.
The 12th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art Still Present! takes place from June 11 to September 18, 2022, and is curated by Kader Attia.
All too often, art mediation is understood as care work in the arts without really being cared for. Designated as the bridge between institutionally produced hierarchical rifts, art mediation cannot assume the role of the agentless caretaker of institutional »powerplays«. Rather than expect art mediation to fix structural fissures, we must dare to look at the wounds themselves. Within the framework of the 12th Berlin Biennale and its focus on repair and decolonial processes, the question we must ask is: Can art mediation itself be repaired? For the 12th Berlin Biennale critical mediation formats provide us the opportunity to engage and exchange with one another in workshops and focus tours. In dialogues with local and decolonial voices, we focus on the multiple meanings of what decolonial art education could be, creating nomadic locations between »atmospheric walls« (Sara Ahmed).
