The Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart was opened in 1996 as a museum for contemporary art. It is the largest institution within the National Gallery and houses the collection of the 21st century. The 30,000 sqm ensemble consisting of the historic station building and the Rieckhallen has been listed listed under historic preservation since February 2023 and is permanently accessible as a public space. The new presentation of the collection shows a panorama of Berlin's art scene from reunification in 1989 to the present day, both inside the museum as well as in the outdoor areas. In the admission free Forum Hamburger Bahnhof, the history of the location and the institution can be discovered in an interactive presentation. 10 special exhibitions per year show artistic positions from all over the world and complement the collection presentations.

The museum opens to the public with a wide range of daily guided tours, bookable workshops, performances, concerts and talks. With community outreach programs, the museum is a lively meeting place in a diverse neighborhood. New event formats such as the admission-free Open House days in June or the open-air DJ series Berlin Beats anchored the Hamburger Bahnhof as a museum for everyone in the heart of Berlin.
